Knitting Guide

Knitting has always been around but recently increased in popularity more than ever due to people having to stay home during isolation. Finding an occupation was key to try and distract ourselves and a lot of us turned to manual activities including painting, knitting, writing and more... 


We could say that knitting has now become the new yoga... and did you know that indeed knitting can help relax and reduce stress? Here's a little guide we have created for you to help you prepare for your next knitting project!

 

First and foremost finding the best yarn for what you want to create. Yarn is a textile commonly made of either animal-based fibers (sheep's wool, mohair, angora), plant-based fibers (cotton, hemp, silk), or synthetic fibers (polyester, nylon, rayon). 

 

There is different weight categories for each yarn which can help determine which one to get depending on your project. For example:

 

 

CATEGORY 0: LACE
(APPROXIMATE EQUIVALENT OF 1 PLY)

The finest type of yarn used for making doilies or other great designs. Needs to be treated with extra care as it is prone to tangling and breakage!

 

CATEGORIES 1, 2, AND 3: SUPER FINE, FINE, AND LIGHT
(APPROXIMATE EQUIVALENT OF 2 TO 5 PLY)

It is a fine yard that cast on and off loosely and best suited for small items like socks, gloves, hats, or clothes for babies and kids.

 

CATEGORY 4: MEDIUM
(APPROXIMATE EQUIVALENT OF 8 TO 10 PLY)

A very popular option amongst knitters of all skill levels. It provides a great stitch definition in scarves, hats, sweaters and mittens.

  

CATEGORIES 5 AND 6: CHUNKY AND SUPER CHUNKY
(APPROXIMATE EQUIVALENT OF 12 TO 14 PLY)

Great for fast projects with big needles. Will be perfect for your chunky scarves, throws & blankets. It is great for beginners but also great for advanced knitters who want to create something unique.
